What do we mean by evidence 'of God'?

Importantly, the Bible never seeks to prove God's existence. It just doesn't do it.

It opens by describing God's actions in creating the universe and God's existence is taken for granted. Everything else is explained by way of his actions. For this reason, you can't approach the Bible as you would a philosophy textbook, looking for an argument in support of His existence.

Now, you may feel confused and intimidated by those around you who scoff at the idea of God. You may be wondering whether your sense of God's presence is silly.

However just because atheism is in vogue at the moment doesn't mean it's right. People who believe in God are often made to feel like fools. Richard Dawkins and the New Atheists speak derisively and patronizingly of those who believe in 'imaginary friends' or 'fairies at the bottom of the garden'. But this kind of dismissal is superficial.

God has acted decisively in history in ways that imaginary friends or fairies haven't. So in recording God's actions, the Bible reveals God's character.

This is why this website speaks of evidence 'of God' rather than 'for God'. The Bible provides evidence for God's character by describing things God has done in history and things He's said and thought.

And Jesus is the best evidence for the character of God. The Bible records his coming to earth, his life, ministry, death, resurrection and continuing involvement in the lives of people.

In some ways, the Bible is like a love letter. You can meet God in its pages. Hear the tone of his voice, understand the issues on his mind, feel his concerns.

And, you can come to know Him personally. That invitation is constant throughout.

In the Bible, Jesus is the culmination of God's revelation of himself. This is how one of its writers, a disciple of Jesus called John, understood the coming of Jesus:

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth." John 1:14

Jesus really is full of 'grace and truth'. He brought healing to people all around him; healing in his words and healing in his actions. And Jesus was full of truth. He came as the fulfillment of prediction and He spoke with authority.

The most spectacular thing Jesus did was to head relentlessly to an awful death on a cross to make payment for the wrong things we humans have done. He sacrificed himself for you.

Unlike a piece of toast with a dodgy image, Jesus is the real thing. So look to Him to find God.

In order to satisfy yourself that Jesus is real evidence of God, you'll need to read the Bible and you may find the links on this site helpful with questions or objections that you have.
